May 31, 2009; there sure was a man on mission, who slept possibly the most peaceful sleep in 25 years. That man was a warrior(-1), a winner(-1) and a legend(-1). The negatives all daunted by a single unreached goal that shattered all dreams he wanted to have during the troublesome sleep over the years. But on that day, he slept not because the goal is reached, not because he won the war and for sure not because he had his sedatives
He slept because he knew the road to his dream, his destiny has not only be laid but also been powered. He just need to turn on the switch. That evening, Robin Soderling beat the legendary Rafael Nadal convincingly in the French open. The man who thought can’t be defeated was defeated. And Federer smiled in his sleep.
He knew the only one who let his dream shatter for 3 consecutive years is no more a threat, Thanks Robin!
From then, there is nothing the FedExpress couldn’t squander. Tommy Haas troubled him a bit, Monfils submitted to the pure legendary, Del Potro troubled a bit and Robin Soderling wasn’t a trouble to the consistent contender. The little rain didn’t trouble Federer, the fans supporting him to the core and Soderling submitting uncharacterstically, Federer beat him 6-1, 7-6,6-4. With that he became only the fourth in the open era to win all 4 majors. The last one was the American Glamboy, Andre Agassi, who presented the much awaited trophy to the winner.
The tears that flown his cheeks have many stories to tell, much anguish to substitute and a life size history in the making. Almost a year back when the legend pleaded God that the loses to the Spanish Bull are killing him! knows the tears have a valid place in the finals. They are hard earned, after all! Praised all through the career from a Junior wimbledon champion, tears have been FedEx’s partner. But these are different. These are from the man who conquered the world, and who proved the world he still is the best, on the very soil that fantasized and denied him the ultimate glory from years. Finally it has to give itself to the man who deserved it.
And this victory has more to it! This victory starts his bid to regain his race to the place as No 1 in world tennis when Wimbledon starts in a Fortnight’s time and that is his home turf. His own place. And if he can manage to win that, he will be on top of the world with 15 Grand Slams and a Slam (all 4 major titles of the year).
Though there are doubts, what could have happened if Fedex faced Nadal in this year’s final: We never know! On the day, Soderling proved he can overpower and overrun Nadal and he did it and he deserved to be in the final only to be the spectator of the best in action. He got the best seat in the stadium! It could have been anything if The Bull has made its way to the final, but let’s be happy that we have seen a legend from the making.
Jai Ho Fedex!
